What a Boys & Girls Club Offers
Fun!
Boys & Girls Clubs encourage Members to have fun! Whether it’s kicking a soccer ball or learning new step dance routines, Club Members develop a sense of belonging through the personal connections they establish with staff and their peers. The Club serves as a fun and safe second “home”, a place that Members feel is their own.
Rule number one for almost everything that happens at the Club is that it must be a place where young people can come to have fun and enjoy being with their friends.
A Safe Positive Environment
Club staff, facilities, program offerings, and age-appropriate settings produce a sense of physical and emotional safety, as well as continuity and predictability for Members. The Club sets clear expectations that provide structure for activities, define acceptable behaviors and consequences for inappropriate behavior, and are and consistently and positively reinforced by staff.
The Club is a safe place where the young are free from the negative influences within the environment around them.
Opportunities and Expectations
Club Members are able to acquire a range of physical, social, technological, artistic, and life skills. The Clubs help Members develop a moral compass that allows them to know right from wrong and behave in an ethical manner. Club Members can receive daily guidance in school work study habits, and resources designed to encourage them to develop a life plan that emphasizes the importance of job readiness and community involvement.
The role of staff is to constantly affirm the capabilities and potential of each Club member.
Supportive Relationships
Clubs provide youth with the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with peers and adults. Staff are proactive in cultivating and maintaining these relationships to ensure that every member feels connected to one or more adult staff and is able to forge friendships with peers.
Staff express and convey a warmth, closeness, caring, appreciation, acceptance, and proper guidance in their ongoing interactions with Members.
Recognition
In a variety of ways, Clubs recognize and affirm young people’s accomplishments. Staff use positive reinforcement and encouragement for member improvements and successes, whether it be academics, sports or simply caring gestures towards other Club Members. Members’ accomplishments are often prominently displayed in Clubs, further validating their confidence and self-esteem.
“Congratulations!” “Way to Go,Great Job.”
